Integration of resilience issues into the MPAs management plans

Guidelines shaped during a workshop

This first workshop of the extension phase of the Resilience Twinning project (Transatlantic MPA Network – TMP) was held in Florianopolis (Brazil) from 15 to 17 November 2018 at the ICMBio Carijos ecological station.

The objective of the workshop was to develop the roadmap, timeframe, and methodology for the preparation of guidelines to integrate resilience issues into MPAs management plans and management effectiveness evaluation frameworks.

The guidelines will address not only resilience of MPAs but also the contribution of MPAs to the resilience of surrounding coastal territories. The guidelines will address the evaluation of management effectiveness, but also the development of MPA management plans, as a checklist to improve resilience, providing a baseline for future evaluations of management effectiveness.

During the sessions a list of criteria and indicators was established to be taken into consideration to integrate resilience into management plans and management evaluation frameworks.

The workshop gathered the EU experts, partners of MPAs and Coastal Resilience twinning project. The event was hosted by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The animation of the workshop included, aside from the coordination team, the active involvement of the core partners of the TMP Resilience Twinning Project.
