François Simard

Deputy Director and Senior Advisor for Fisheries at the IUCN Global Marine and Polar Programme

François Simard is Deputy Director and Senior Advisor for Fisheries at the IUCN Global Marine and Polar Programme. He works on a broad range of issues including marine protected areas, governance, fisheries and aquaculture. After completing his master’s degree in marine ecology and aquaculture, François moved to Japan where he worked as a guest researcher at the Tokyo University of Fisheries.

He has travelled extensively around Japan and East Asia, studying small‐scale traditional fisheries and their management. He later returned to Europe, and has worked with the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco as deputy director for 12 years.

Member of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas from the late 1980s, he started working with the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation as Marine Programme Coordinator in March 2003. He moved to IUCN Headquarters in 2009 to take up his current position. François was born in France.
